Oui | 2016 Reflections

For those of you, who have come from my old blog Pencil Stitches, you will know that I love to do a round up of the year by reflecting on what has happened. 2016 has been a pretty big year in the May household. If at the start of the year someone turned around and told us we would be home owners and expectant parents I think we might of laughed in their face! However lets start from the beginning...

The year started off fairly busy with a work trip to Paris to do some trend research for my 'day job' and the build up of Sincerely May attending the 'Most Curious Wedding Fair' in Shoreditch. This was a big move for my business and was a massive learning curve and confidence boost to my business. This followed with another trip to London and Windsor with my parents.

In February, Alex won a Cornish 'Latte Art' Competition. I was so proud of him for winning this.. its a massive passion of his and I am so glad he has found his calling. For those of you who don't know what 'latte art' is, it is the pretty patterns that are drawn in the coffee with the milk. Looks super easy, but trust me.... it is a lot harder than it looks.

Moving on to April, I was lucky enough to travel to India and Sri Lanka with work. These are two countries I would love to visit again. The culture and the food was mind blowing and don't get me started on the crazy roads. I don't think I have ever been so scared in my life as I was in the back of an Indian taxi.

In March we celebrated our nephew Travis' first birthday.

In May, for our 4 year Wedding anniversary we had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful Casa Cook in Rhodes, Greece. This week away was just what the doctor ordered for Alex and I, after a busy start to the year. We still talk about that holiday now, as the hotel setting was just stunning. Before we went away for the week, we put an offer on a house that we fell in love with with. After 2015 being the year of house rejection, we were so happy to learn that our offer had been accepted when we returned. We should of known that May would be the month that we would find the cottage that was to become our home. As lets face it, May seems to be our lucky month!

In July, we took another trip to London/Bristol to celebrate Alex's birthday. We basically did a tour of coffee shops that Alex had wanted to visit for a while, with a bit of shopping squeezed in between. We also explored our local area more, having beach BBQ's and coastal walks in the sunshine. We feel incredibly lucky to call Cornwall home.

In August we celebrated two of our good friends getting married at the beautiful Mount Edgecombe.

I also celebrated my 30th birthday with a surprise long weekend planned by Alex to Barcelona.   It turned into a long weekend of coffee, champagne, sunshine and good food! We visited the incredible 'Dry Martini' cocktail bar, which is voted one of the best cocktail bars in the world. I have always wanted to visit a proper cocktail bar and this place lived up to my imagination and more. The drinks were so incredibly tasty and worth every penny in my eyes for the skill involved. I have not had a cocktail like it since... the flavours were just incredible. Let's just say Alex and I had a rather drunken walk through the city back to the hotel!! A night I will not forget in a long time.

In September we celebrated our second nephew Hayden being born.

On October 31st, we finally for the keys to our house and moved in, in November. In true 'Cathryn & Alex' style of always going head first into things... The day we exchanged also happened to be the day we found out we were expecting 'Mini May' in May! As you can imagine this was a pretty big day in our lives and super overwhelming. May seems to be our month!!

For some reason, I always thought I would struggle being pregnant. I have never been truly maternal but I have surprised myself at how I have felt about my 'Mini May' bump. The protection I feel for this little bump is crazy. I have been incredibly lucky so far as I have not suffered from morning sickness and other than the usual aches and pains... my body seems to be coping with pregnancy pretty well. I just hope it continues as the weeks pass. It is crazy to think we are half way through already. I don't know where the time is going. I plan to do another post on my pregnancy soon!

So as a round up, 2016 has been:

  • Another year of travelling and seeing the world - Paris, London, India, Sri Lanka, Greece and finally Barcelona.
  • Alex, falling further in love with the Coffee Industry
  • Building Sincerely May
  • Buying our first home in Cornwall
  • Finding out we are going to become parents
  • Exploring our home 'Cornwall'
  • Meeting new friends and spending time with family.

We are keeping our 2017 'intentions' short and sweet this year:

  • Get through pregnancy as healthily as possible. I have been incredibly lucky so far, and I hope it continues along the same vain.
  • We are looking forward to becoming the best parents we can be. We know it is going to be a challenging chapter, but we can't wait to face it head on.
  • Making our new house more of a home - We have a list of jobs we would like to complete before 'Mini May' arrives, but we are going to try and not put too much pressure on ourselves if we can't get everything done beforehand.
  • Planning a few more adventures/trips for the year ahead. That are baby friendly!
  • Taking each day as it comes and trying not to put any extra stress on ourselves.

We can't wait to see what 2017 will bring for the both of us. Happy 2017 to you all. I hope the year is what you hope it to be!
